Wow, is Project IGI: I'm Going In really the better part of 20 years old? This was a standout shooter for the PC back when it was released and I thought it would be great to go and look and see just how well this landmark tactical first-person shooter has held up over the last two decades!

Where Is The Nuke?
The story that is in Project IGI: I'm Going In is not the most in-depth in the world, but to be fair this was made before games had a Tom Clancy style narrative. The basics of the story are that you are an ex SAS man called, Jones and you are a freelance badass. You have been hired to track down a stolen warhead and what at first seems like a straightforward mission is anything but.
Grab Your Guns
You do have a pretty decent selection of guns in the game. Each gun has its own section and you can use weapons such as assault rifles, shotguns, handguns and so on. Swapping between guns though is a real pain in the butt and it is one of the aspects where the game does show its age. Still, once you do get used to it, it is not that bad. Just be warned it takes a while to get used to it.
Keep It Real
The idea of Project IGI: I'm Going In is that it is a more “realistic” kind of first-person shooter. These days many big shooters manage to walk that fine line of being realistic and also being fun. With this one it is fun, but the gameplay is most certainly a product of its time. It is cool and realistic how walking in front of cameras can get you spotted, but on the flip side of this, you can fire off your gun and no one comes running.
So, for somethings, their realistic approach works very well and for others, not so much. The AI is a mixed bag. Sometimes you can get into a firefight with enemies and it is intense. Other times they will just run straight at you and you can mow them down pretty easily.
Variety Is The Spice Of Life
As this a more tactical shooter, you cannot always go in guns blazing. You will need to figure out ways around certain things. This can be something like hacking a computer, picking a lock or even using a zip wire. These types of things do help add variety to the missions which is great as many of the areas you are in all look similar.
Back in 2000, I am sure that Project IGI: I'm Going In was a masterpiece of a game. It is still kind of fun to play, but I would say that you really had to have played games back then to get the most out of this today. I feel younger gamers may find this just outdated and not fun. Still it does have a charm and it is cool to see what was classed as a realistic first-person shooter 20 years ago.
