Who is Laxmi Agarwal?

Laxmi Agarwal is an acid attack survivor who was attacked with acid by a family friend at the age of 15 because she refused to marry him. Laxmi was so traumatized after the event that she planned to commit suicide but due to support from her parents she went ahead with her life. She took the case to the court and the trial went on for around four years. As a result of this, the attacker was sentenced to 10 years in jail. Since then, Laxmi became the face of several campaigns that fight for acid attack victims. Not only that, one of her petitions has enabled the Supreme Court to pass orders that led to the regulation of the sale of acid, rehabilitation, after-care of acid attack survivors, reservation in educational institutions, and easier access to employment opportunities for acid attack survivors.

For her bravery, Laxmi Agarwal received the International Women of Courage award from the hands of First Lady Michelle Obama in 2014. She also received the International Women Empowerment Award from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and the United Nations Children’s Fund for hosting a campaign called ‘Stop Sale Acid’.

Chhapaak Story

The movie Chhapaak is inspired by the story of Laxmi Agarwal, a real-life acid attack survivor. Deepika Padukone is the main protagonist of the story who plays the role of Malti (inspired by Laxmi’s character). The movie follows the journey of Malti whose life changed after she is attacked in broad daylight on the streets of Delhi by a family friend Bashir Khan (Played by Vishal Dahiya) and his allies. Malti who wanted to become a singer at one time starts working in an NGO for acid victims i.e. run by Amol (Played by Vikrant Massey). In the movie, we see how Malti tries to move on from the emotional scars that the gruesome crime has left behind.

The film focuses on how Malti along with her lawyer Archana Bajaj (Played by Madhurjeet Sarghi) succeeds in having the penal code amended against acid violence.

The soundtrack album of Chhapaak movie consists of four songs and has been composed by music composer trio Shankar–Ehsaan-Loy. The album was released digitally by Zee Music Company. The lyrics of these songs have been written by Gulzar.
